Understanding Anxiety
Many different situations trigger anxiety. Some people are anxious around people whom they don’t know. Some people are afraid of getting sick, an illness, death of themselves or a loved one, or some other harm. Some people have panic attacks. Others feel a general background, low-level feeling of anxiety and worry all the time.

People seek help from a therapist when the level of anxiety that they are experiencing begins to impact their daily ability to sleep, function at work, in their relationships, or during their downtime.

The Role of Avoidance

The key to managing anxiety is understanding that anxiety is not the problem. It is the avoidance of anxiety and the avoidance of things that trigger anxiety that is the problem.

Anxiety and avoidance are best friends. They go everywhere together.

In the short term, we get temporary relief from the anxiety by avoiding things that make us anxious. This feeling of relief reinforces the likelihood that we will avoid it next time. Rather than reducing our anxiety, in the long term, this avoidance increases our anxiety because we don’t put ourselves in situations that allow us to see that they aren’t that bad after all! We soon discover that our world is small, boring, lonely, rigid, or that we aren’t living to our potential.

Worry, overthinking, and worst-case scenarios consume our minds. We find ourselves overplanning, overdoing, and overcontrolling in an attempt to gain a sense of certainty or perceived safety.
How Therapy Helps Manage Anxiety
Therapy helps you understand how this cycle plays out for you. You learn to relate to the part of yourself that feels anxious in a new, more helpful way. You learn to calm and soothe your nervous system.
Slowly, with compassion, your therapist helps you to begin to change the behaviour that keeps you stuck. With support, your world starts to grow again.

Sacha utilises evidence-based therapies of CBT, Schema Therapy, Internal Family Systems Therapy, and EMDR to process past trauma related to anxiety, learn effective emotional regulation, and gain the skills and confidence necessary to live a calmer, full life.
